Cool cooler

So far so good. A little more power hungry than the big brands but for a fraction of the price it’s hard to complain. My only real concern is the plastic latch interface. It seems rather cheap and there’s really not a way to repair if you did break it. Just use caution when closing and it should last a long time.

Amazing frozen with 12 volt

Better than expected. It was perfect for my boat trip to Bahamas. Worked perfectly with the 12volt energy. Amazing frozen fish with no hesitate.

Costway 53qt ( STAKOL ) Portable Car Refrigerator Freezer CoolerI ordered this refrigerator freezer cooler based on the cost per qt size, which is the best value with this model / style cooler.I received the refrigerator cooler in the mail approximately a week later. After opening the box I was immediately impressed with the quality and size of the cooler. I let the refrigerator freezer sit for a 24 hour period before usage as described in the booklet material.On Fri Aug 21, 2020 11am I powered on the cooler, documenting power 12volt battery usage while in operation. While setting up I realized a Bluetooth emblem on the display. It actually synced up with an App called CarFridgeFreezer.I started the usage test plugging the cooler into the 12v port of a Goal Zero Yeti 1000 power supply with 100% battery life.Fri 11:00am 100% battery - STARTFri 5:38pm 91% batteryFri 7:18pm 90% batteryFri 8:40pm 88% batteryFri 10:26pm 86% batterySat 2:13am 84% battery - 15hr LaterSat 3:05am 83% batterySat 6:47am 80% batterySat 9:30am 78% batterySat 11:10am 77% batterySat 8:02pm 70% batterySat 11:05pm 68% battery - End 36hrs laterMax watts observed was 45watts upon initial start. This cooler is very quiet, I was very impressed with the power usage considering the size of the cooler. I find the cooler to be designed very well for rugged use.I have started documenting long term cooler durability while being mobile. Great fridge! Works perfectly. For the price it’s a no brainer. Not the best insulated, but for 300$ it’s great.

Great fridge! Does not discharge battery on car even when left on for 10hrs in 85 degree night time temp! Only downside I see at all is that it doesn’t hold cool well if cutoff. So basically after it’s off it will be to surrounding temp within an hour or so. But as stated above, since it doesn’t drain the battery during that timeframe, that’s not a real problem!

Works well in Semi truck

Have only been using it for a week. Have to plug in direct to AC outlet if out of the truck over the weekend.Works great on DC as long as the truck is running during the week

Good overall initial impressions

Item shipped from Southern California. Mine came in a Costway box but was labeled as a Stakol. I think that means “stay cool” - at least I hope that is what they were aiming for.I bought this for overlanding because the price is so low. The name brand units are way out of my budget, especially with accessories. It is easy to spend $1500 on an ARB or Dometic setup. This cost $329.99 with a coupon, and $47 for the insulated Smittybilt cover. If it lasts a year I’ve gotten my money’s worth. I did get the 5 year warranty. This model has protectors on the edges that none of the other Chinese ones seem to have. I think this is the “rugged” model.It makes rattling noises when it runs. I got the Smittybilt insulated cover others mention in reviews and it eliminates the rattles and turns the sound into a home refrigerator hum. At the back where you insert the plug, that whole area has big vents and the plastic is super cheap, but just in the rear/back section by the compressor. Also the source of the rattles. The rest of the plastic feels durable, like it can take a beating. At 33lbs the fridge feels sturdy overall. The handles feel durable. The screen is bright and easy to read with high contrast. The lid latch mechanism is the weakest link for sure. It does not promote confidence. I am gentle with it. If it breaks the insulated cover has velcro to keep the lid in place or I could make my own velcro strap and that would probably be enough. It is not ruined if the latch breaks.Setting the temp to 32°F (0°C) did not freeze anything. I had to set mine to around 20°F (-6.7°C) or less to freeze bottled water with any haste. It can freeze a gallon water jug into a solid block of ice, just not as fast as a home freezer. And it only uses 45 watts DC. I think the internal thermostat is off, but with a little time you’ll figure out what temperature setting works best for you.Bluetooth?!! A bluetooth symbol appeared on the screen when I turned it on. No mention of that in the product description? Appears as “BT201-Audio”. Instructions say to search for “car fridge” app. Found it and installed. So far on iOS it has worked great. And once you connect to the fridge, you can change any settings you want. The app has just a couple reviews and they are bad. I think it is because several other manufacturers say they can connect to this app but ultimately cannot. It is a Chinese app, so you’ve got that to consider.The app fixes a common complaint with this fridge. With the app you can set the temperature variance. (It is set to 5° by default.) This means if you set the fridge to 32°F (0°C), it will rise to 37°F (2.8°C) before coming on. You can change this in the app to as low as a 2° variance. Be warned though, if you set it to just 2°F of variance the compressor will run much more than normal. Not a big deal if you’re plugged in at home. I've added pictures showing the app and where to change the temperature variance.The insulated cover from Smittybilt makes a difference. I’ve tested the fridge with and without the cover and the compressor comes on less frequently and uses less energy with the cover on.Update: Has now survived 6 weekend long offroad adventures with no problems.Each trip I cover hundreds of miles off-road, sometimes in truly awful terrain, but the fridge has held up to it all. It is nowhere near as delicate as I thought it was. On trip #5 I had bottles of water and a plastic 16oz bottle in the fridge and hit some bumps so hard the plastic bottle shattered inside the fridge and released its contents of PB Fit and almond milk. An absolutely disgusting mess - but my point is that life is hard in the back of my Toyota.The app is handy! I kept wondering if the fridge came unplugged after traversing rough terrain - I would have stopped to check the 12v connections, but no need to with the app. Also nice to be able to keep an eye on it without being in front of it.

Uses less energy with 12v plug

When using the 120v power brick adapter, it uses more energy because the brick uses energy to convert and my inverter uses energy to convert the battery bank to 120v. Also, there are two spots on the exterior where the freon lines must be close to the outer plastic shell as a little condensation forms. There is an insulating carry bag sold by another company that fits this exactly and that would better insulate things.

Frozen solid

I purchased this for my sailboat and could not be happier. Frozen food, including ice cream stays frozen and the second compartment is perfect for keeping food and beverages cold but not frozen. The unit retains its settings when the power is off and resumes operation when the power is restored. Love it.

Definitely Worth the Money

Brought this before the pandemic and been using it 24 hours since then and its been fantastic. Great product

Awesome on the go freezer/cooler

Love bringing this to picnics or outdoor get togethers because it keeps my beverages and or food nice and chill. The design seems pretty high tech and I find it more reliable than a regular plastic cooler. There’s grooves on top of the cooler/freezer to hold your beverages which I find useful. Very easy to use and high quality!
