This is an elegantly designed untreated wood stand. It is strong enough to hold plants, but in general is pretty lightweight. The assembly instructions are just pictures, but the parts are labelled, so it is not that difficult to figure out where things go. A major design compromise, done I am sure for shipping purposes, is that the two main supports come in two pieces each, and are bolted together through a four inch piece of wood, four bolts on each side. Even when securely bolted, it allows some movement. I am planning to take it apart and use wood glue, as well as bolts, to hold these pieces together. There are pilot holes on the shelves, but not in the supports. It would have been more helpful, for alignment of the shelves, if there were pilot holes in the supports. The instructions recommend attaching the bottom shelf first, and then work your way up. I would attach bottom first, and then top, then the top and bottom vertical support, and then fill in the middle shelves. That makes it a little easier to square everything up. The instructions are not clear as to whether the vertical supports should be mounted in contact with the bottom of the shelf. I think it is more stable that way, but you need to make sure you leave enough room between the lip of the shelf and the side support so it will fit that way. I like the way it looks indoors. It would need to be painted or treated to be outside, but even with that, I don't know if would stand up to outdoor weather. I also think the price is a little high, but it is exactly what I was looking for, so I can't complain.

I actually use this for a different purpose than it is intended. I use it as steps for my cats to get out to my backyard (and back in). It works great!
