Both ends need something to secure to and I do love the product and will purchase another one.
I like how sturdy and seemingly durable the fabric is. The retractable feature is necessary and easy to use. * You MUST have something to attach both ends to.* One end of mine is attached to the deck, hand-rail (I included picture) and the side with the handle is mounted to the deck floor. I had a person handy with tools install mine. I would purchase this product again and will probably get one for the other side of my deck.

Great solution
I bought this to block the sun on my deck. If you are not particularly handy, like us, the directions leave a bit to be desired. I had my handyman install this for us, but it was a quick job. Because of the way ours is being used, the main support side had to have the heavy-duty anchors put into our house, and the post it pulls over to was screwed down onto deck flooring. It needs to be lined up accurately for easy usage. So far, it is serving its purpose well, keeping my deck cooler when it’s pulled across and is attractive as well. Guests this weekend were impressed with this product. It seems to be of good quality, heavy duty. I will say, it also blocks the breeze, not a concern for me, but some might.
